Shadeland Tutoring and Recreation (STAR) is a weekly program to assist children with their homework and give them opportunities to participate in activities they might not otherwise get the chance to participate in.
We at The Mercy House feel we have a great deal to offer the children in our community. By providing them with homework assistance, extracurricular activities, and taking an interest in their lives, we hope to give these children a positive outlook on the future. This is not meant to be a replacement for other community programs in the area (Boys & Girls Club, etc.), but is meant to serve the children directly in our neighborhood who would not have transportation to other after-school clubs.
Every child needs help with homework sometimes and we want to assist them and encourage the importance
of homework.
The children in our neighborhood only get one hour of art each week in the public schools. We want to encourage children with artistic leanings by giving them another place to express themselves creatively.
Being the Hoosier state, this is a very popular activity for the children in our neighborhood. They spend their time learning basketball technique, rules, and good sportsmanship.
Children are taught how to build and repair bicycles by members of Shadeland Bicycle Collective. They hope to donate completed bikes to people in the community who need them.
Many of our children come from homes where they don’t get enough healthy food to eat. We end the day with healthy food.
STAR will not succeed without the support of the community. There are several specific ways you can help:
